Unmoderated usability tests are easier to set up and give an assessment of a large record sample. However, the possible uncertainty, errors and bias involved are far greater. The unmoderated remote usability tests are just tools in addition to others for gathering information from the user. Hence, it is not a replacement to other methods.
The participants and you are not physically accessible to each other, and hence tasks to be done, should be explained well. Keeping it simple and short is the key to improving clarity. Covering each aspect of a complicated task, one at a time, helps in keeping the respondents interest alive.
