How to Get High Search Engine Rankings
By Peter Brittain - Managing Director of Northland Digital | Slinky Internet Marketing
Being on top of search engine rankings generates a lot of traffic but the quality of the traffic cannot be guaranteed, however all webmasters and website owners want top search engine rankings. Google is the most favored search engine and almost every one strives for a higher ranking on Google. Its really a challenge to be on top with all the keywords and keyphrases, so how do we accomplish this seemingly difficult task?
Well the key to winning this challenge is to play the search engine game within the rules, too many people have tried to beat the search engines in this but have failed miserably. It is natural for people to attempt new tricks and gimmicks to reach the top rankings on search engines, but search engines are always a few steps ahead, they spend millions of dollars to combat methods that try and circumvent the systems. So its futile to try and beat the big boys at their own game instead it makes sense to play by the rules and achieve the desired results.
Although search engines are different companies in their own right they do have some similarity in the criteria to decide rankings. Complex algorithms decide the page and website rankings and they are closely guarded, however to rank higher on the search engines, websites need to satisfy certain things that are common for all search engines.
The first thing search engines look at is the phrases you have on your website and the density of keywords and keyphrases. The websites utility as a resource and the number of quality websites that link to your website are also taken into account. Your websites relevance is also considered before ranking it.
Google lays a great emphasis on relevance, if your website is relevant to people looking for the information then you can rest easy, your page or website will be ranked higher on Google. This calls for a change in strategy and you have to become the number one resource of information in your field of business to get higher rankings. You will have to offer a broad spectrum of relevant information and content related to other areas as well.
When search engines look at keyphrases and keywords they make sure that not many keywords are repeated on the same page. The density of the keywords and keyphrases have to be judicious and keyword spamming is frowned upon. The quality and the source of the content is also considered when deciding the sites utility as a resource.
When looking at the sites that link back to you they look at the sites credibility and the how they are linking back to you, as well as the sites own ranking.
Ultimately it all boils down to one thing and that is relevant content, the more relevant content you have on your site the higher your search engine rank will be.
